What is a Civil Engineer:A civil engineer designs cities. The oldest of the engineering professions, civil engineers originally designed forts, bridges, and roads for military applications, but later engineers applied their skills to address civilian needs. Civil engineers design our transportation network, provide safe drinking water and treat wastewater, protect society against the destructive power of Mother Nature, build tall structures, analyze groundwater and geotechnical conditions, dig canals, and construct dams and reservoirs. Civil engineers are involved in the designing the necessary infrastructure that we take for granted. Civil engineering is a profession that serves the people first. "Today's engineers are expected to support and enhance our way of life by synthesizing increasingly complex engineering systems using methods that are socially, economically, and environmentally responsible." (From the Colorado School Mines Division of Engineering website.) It relies upon adequate communication between the client, government employees, and the general public. Civil engineers are being called upon to find innovative solutions to complex problems in our nation's infrastructure while being sensitive to the needs of society. |
